RE: North London forever... Arsenal lose on penalty shootout
Man, what an absolute kick in the teeth. Winning your first Premier League title in over two decades just to lose the Champions League final on penalties a week later is peak football. It’s brilliant, but it’s cruel as hell.
You’ve got to feel for Arsenal here. Scoring in the first six minutes is the ultimate dream start, but trying to park the bus against a team like PSG for the next 84 minutes is just asking for trouble. Giving up 75% of the ball is basically football suicide. I don't care how good your central defenders are—if you let a team attack you in waves for that long, someone is going to mess up. It sucks that it was the young lad Mosquera who gave away the penalty, but that’s what happens when you’re forced to play a backup against world-class wingers.
And then penalties. The absolute worst way to lose a game. Gabriel blasting his shot into row Z is the kind of stuff that will keep him awake at night for the next six months. It’s good to see Marquinhos going over to comfort him, though. At least there's some class left in the game, because football can be a proper bastard sometimes.
PSG winning back-to-back titles is impressive, even if their oil money makes it hard to completely cheer for them. But congrats to them, I guess. For Arsenal, it’s a massive reality check. They had a historic season, but if you want to be the actual kings of Europe, you can’t just defend for your life and hope to survive. Still, what a hell of a game to watch.
