Giants 18th-century Belgium? Or Satire
This engraving, ( LITERALLY TAKEN ME NEARLY A DAY TO FIND OUT WHERE IT ACTUALLY COMES FROM, SO MUCH MISINFORMATION ON IT AND TO BE 100% HONEST I’M STILL NOT SURE IF THIS INFORMATION IS CORRECT. BUT I COULDN’T DEBUNK IT THROUGH THE SOURCES) though often misidentified, does indeed have deep roots in late 18th-century Belgium.
Historical Origin and Facts The image depicts a pivotal moment in the Peasants' War (Boerenkrijg), a revolt that took place in 1798 in the Southern Netherlands (modern-day Belgium) against French Revolutionary rule. Who: The figures in armour at the bottom are the Brigands (the Belgian peasant rebels).
The "giants" at the top are a mythological or highly stylized representation of the overwhelming and "monstrous" power of the French Revolutionary Army. When: The actual historical event was in 1798, and this engraving was likely produced shortly after in the late 18th century (c. 1799) as a piece of powerful political propaganda.
Where: The scene is set in the Belgian countryside, specifically representing a desperate stand on a rocky ridge, which was a common tactical position for the rebels in regions like the Kempen or Ardennes. Why the "18th-Century Armour"? Your observation about the 18th-century armour is the "smoking gun" for its real identity: Fact: The helmets and breastplates (cuirasses) shown are the exact equipment used by French Cuirassiers and heavy cavalry during the late 1700s. Satire: In this context, the armour isn't meant to be prehistoric; it identifies the humans as contemporary soldiers and rebels.
The giants throwing boulders represent the "Titan-like" struggle of the local population against a massive foreign empire. Correcting the "Primitive Man" Misinformation You are 100% correct that the common online attribution to Louis Figuier's L'Homme Primitif (1870) is incorrect. (A.I. AND SO MANY SOURCES HAD IT LABELLED AS AN IMAGE FROM THE FOR MENTIONED 1870 BOOK Louis Figuier's L'Homme Primitif. I DOWNLOADED THE PDF AND WENT THROUGH EVERY PAGE BUT I COULDN’T FIND IT IN THAT BOOK…. BECAUSE IT WASN’T IN THERE. GETTY, BRIDGEMAN AND OTHERS HAVE THE DESCRIPTION OF THIS IMAGE WRONG. I THINK THIS IS INTENTIONAL)
Look and Learn History Picture Archive The Error: Modern stock photo sites Alamy and Look and Learn have mislabelled this print for years. The Difference: Actual illustrations from Figuier's book show naked or fur-clad cavemen, not soldiers in polished steel breastplates. This image is a rare piece of Belgian political satire from the 1790s, using the imagery of giants to dramatize the brutal reality of the French occupation.
