PLN explained that the blackout occurred due to extreme weather that disrupted the 275 kV Muara Bungo–Sungai Rumbai transmission network in Jambi. The impact spread to various regions such as Aceh, North Sumatra, West Sumatra, Riau, Jambi, and parts of South Sumatra. This condition disrupted residents' activities because the supply of electricity and clean water was also interrupted, plus the hot weather made it difficult for many people to rest without fans or air conditioning.

In response to public complaints, PLN apologized and stated that the restoration process was ongoing. As of Saturday (May 23, 2026) at 10:00 AM WIB, approximately 8.3 million of the total 13.1 million affected customers were reported to have regained power. However, several areas that had previously had power were reported to experience blackouts again on Saturday evening, allegedly due to the rotating blackout system. Residents also hope that the electricity supply will be fully restored soon.
