⚠️ Steem Payouts Are NOT What You Think (Important for Everyone!)

Many users on Steem still believe that post rewards are shown in real USD.
That is not correct — and it’s causing a lot of confusion.

👉 The payout you see is based on SBD (Steem Backed Dollars), NOT actual dollars.

🔎 The Problem

Steem displays rewards as if:

1 SBD = $1

But in reality, SBD often trades below $1.

📉 Example right now:
1 SBD ≈ $0.5040

🧮 Simple Example

If your post shows:

➡️ $10.00 payout

Most people think:

“I will receive $10”

But here’s what actually happens:

Real value:
10 × 0.5040 = $5.04

⚖️ Reward Split

That $5.04 is then divided:

  • 50% → Author
  • 50% → Curators

So you actually get:

  • ✍️ Author reward ≈ $2.52
  • 👥 Curators ≈ $2.52

💡 Final Reality

Even though your post shows $10, you only receive:

➡️ ~$2.52 in real value (as author)

❗ Why This Matters

  • The displayed payout is misleading
  • It assumes SBD = $1 (which is often false)
  • Both authors and curators earn less than expected

🧾 Simple Formula

Real Value = Displayed Payout × SBD Price
Author Reward = Real Value × 0.5

🚨 Conclusion

If SBD is below $1, your actual rewards are much lower than what you see.

👉 Always check the real SBD price before estimating your payout.

I think this was updated at one point, maybe 2 years ago, it was to reflect more effectively the real rewards, perhaps a update again could show more realistic earnings.

It's really misleading and confusing, especially as a beginner.

 last month

It is not easy for beginners to understand Steem Dollar (SBD) as most newbies have not even been paid in SBD

Will 1 Steem Dollar always be worth $1.00 USD?
The market value of a Steem Dollar is dictated by the supply and demand of the token. Therefore it is possible for 1 SBD to be worth more or less than 1 USD depending on market conditions.

payouts are always calculated based on the value of SBD

SBD is listed on the HTX crypto exchange and it is also possible to buy/sell SBD/Steem on the internal market

Esto deberìa ser cierto, porque recuerdo que cuando yo iniciè en steemit , el SBD valìa entre 6 a 8 dòlares. En el 2017. Eran buenos momentos.

Yes, it was a great time, with good earnings at the time.

SND came for a different reason and would be payout to guarantee that 1 dollar. If the rules of the game are changed and changed it is good to announce this everywhere where as many can see it and not let people believe it is still 1 USD

How many people read the steem faq?
if they did they would understand

It's always a good idea to remind users because people seem to forget. That's the problem with using the dollar sign. They should really change it to the Steem symbol, or an alternate. It wouldn't be a necessary change, but a quality of life one that brings more clarity.

Thanks alot, I learnt something today😊

Great you took the time to write this after @almaguer his question in Talkchannel.
I do believe it is misleading how it is presented and an update would be good esp now SBD is no longer paid out and (been) burned.

That's a good explanation, it makes a difference. It's clear now; I've never seen this explanation anywhere.

Nice that I could help you with info

The big question for me is why. What's the reason to the rewards been shown in a misleading way. Well, it may be a technical issues that I would not understand. Long ago we are not receiving SBD and the last time I check it's price was in red. For sure something more accurate is less deceiving for any user, new or old ones.

You truly believe that it is okay to give misleading info? Is it hard to change $ into SBD?

Do you believe the FAQ is written in a way at least 90% of the users are able to understand how or what is meant?

I remember when I created my user I read a lot of material offered, till I got tired and just wanted to start doing (posting, etc). I don't think I can remember everything I read (or understood it all haha, since I didn't know anything about cripto).

Maybe images like this post graphics, which I can see now, it's more understandable for everyone.

I doubt there's a good reason, more likely it is something that slipped the mind or old info never been updated unlike the FAQ or???
