The Rise of the Walls: Constructing the Guard House

The Rise of the Walls

The square and lines are here, waiting as the brush goes swish-swish on the slab, a clean slab for a perfect stick. Laid on 1 inch/25mm of mortar bed, the 9" hollow blocks line up in a straight line, making perfect 90° angles. If the base is not square, the roof will not be.

Go round one course then another. The Rise of the Walls is gradual. Starting from one corner first, then stringing between them.

Site engineer crouches low, string line pulled tight corner to corner. Lifting the structure off the ground like it’s learning to stand. "These walls must not sweat" Says the site engineer as he recommends a bitumen layer as part of the wall.

Getting taller every course, we have found a door for the wind. Light in, wind out, now the house can breathe. We just gave our guide post lungs. The rise is one block at a time.

Bang! bang!!, The carpenter is here again; it's lintel framework time. Over the door and over the window, it must go all round.

Bang! bang!! Bang!!! Nails bite into timber and walls. The carpenter squares the formwork. 9 inches deep, plumbed with the spirit level. "Plumb it true," he mutters. "If the base leans, the whole house lies."

Volume calculated: Area x Depth. ∼0.5145 cubic meters of C25. Firm enough to carry the weight coming next with the help of Y12 rebar at the core like its bones.

Slump test done. Ploosh! Into the formwork slurry goes. Vibrator hums: brrrrmmm... brrrrmmm... chasing air pockets out.

Silence for 3 days, and that’s where the magic happens. Wet concrete turning to stone while nobody is watching. Then the real music starts.

Conclusion

From "Thunk!" of the first peg to the final tap on wet lintel concrete, we’ve gone from setting out to lock-in. We squared the ground, lifted it 3 courses above DPC, raised straight walls in stretcher bond, and capped the openings with reinforced lintels. We don’t just have walls now - we have structure.

Born as a white elephant, now off-white and brown, it's the colour of resurrection. Now the house has bones. The roof can come next, and the building won’t twist.
