RE: It's my party and...

Here, it’s not customary to give an envelope containing money. Perhaps at a wedding, but even then there’s usually a list of items the bride and groom have requested, often with the name of the shop included (an extremely expensive one).
Here, an envelope containing money is seen as impersonal and a sign of laziness – the fact that you don’t know the person whose birthday it is or who is celebrating, and you’re trying to get it over and done with. The amount also plays a role. Many people often feel pressured to give more than they can afford.
My feelings on this are mixed. I have no problem giving money, because I think giving a gift the recipient doesn’t want is a waste of money.
Usually, I do go for a gift and ask the person what they’d like (if I buy it online, I’ll send a link to the shop – hahahaha – partly because we’re not all in the same country).
Anyway, the next birthday is tomorrow and he’ll be getting money, although he’d also be happy with a lawnmower (something I’d benefit from the most myself).
I enjoyed reading this.

Here, even at weddings, we give an envelope with money, we like it because we don't have to think too much about what to give. It's a custom.
