Today this idea feels very inhuman and painful to imagine.

In ancient China there were punishments that involved heavy physical pain.One such punishment was called “slow slicing” where parts of the body were removed over time.This was used for very serious crimes. It was one of the most terrifying punishments in history and shows how strict law systems were in the past.In ancient Persia there was a punishment where criminals were tied between two boats and pulled apart in water. This method was used for traitors and people who committed serious crimes against the state.It shows how strongly rulers tried to protect their power and control.

In medieval Europe some punishments were also very strange.People were put in wooden devices like stocks or pillories.The criminal’s head and hands were locked in wood and they were displayed in public. People would throw food stones or insult them.This was done to shame the person in front of the community.In some cultures there were also punishments like boiling oil or burning at the stake.These punishments were used for crimes such as theft witchcraft or rebellion.People believed that extreme punishment would bring justice and stop evil actions.

Another strange punishment was banishment.Instead of killing someone they were forced to leave their home forever.This was also very painful because people lost their family land and identity. Living alone in a new place was like a slow punishment for them.When we look at these punishments today we feel shocked and sad.Modern laws are much more focused on human rights and fair justice.Now we try to reform criminals instead of only punishing them.Education prison systems and rehabilitation programs are used instead of cruel punishments.
