Surgeries in space.

What if someone needs emergency surgery hundreds of millions of miles from the nearest hospital?

In May 2026, scientists from Nanyang Technological University presented a surgical microbot just 4.4 mm in length, smaller than a common seed, despite its tiny size it is capable of executing multiple complex medical tasks without any physical connection to the outside world.

The importance of this technology becomes even greater when we look at the challenges of space medicine. In microgravity environments, body fluids do not behave the same on Earth, a conventional surgery could become a real disaster inside a ship or a lunar base, blood, liquids and particles could contaminate equipment, put the crew at risk and compromise the entire mission, therefore, the future of space medicine increasingly depends on minimally invasive procedures.

And it is exactly in that scenario where this new micro-robot comes into action.

Unlike traditional surgical equipment, it does not use cables or internal batteries. All control occurs externally through low-intensity magnetic fields. The researchers manage to guide the device inside the human body with extreme precision, as if they were controlling a small microscopic submarine navigating between tissues and organs, and the most impressive thing is not its movement, but its versatility.

While previous generations of micro-robots were designed to perform only a specific function, this new system can quickly switch between different tasks: moving across biological surfaces, making precise cuts, delivering drugs directly into an affected region, collecting samples for biopsies, and even generating controlled heat to destroy diseased tissues, all in a matter of seconds.

One of the most important advances was the introduction of a complete rotation movement on its own axis, allowing it to escape from narrow regions and navigate trajectories impossible for conventional devices. In laboratory tests, the micro-robot managed to cut tissues, collect biological samples and generate therapeutic heat with high precision.

The experiments also showed levels of compatibility greater than 99% with living cells, a fundamental step for future medical applications, for thousands of years we looked at the moon in the stars only as observers, now we slowly begin to build tools to live among them and perhaps future generations will remember this time as the moment when humanity decided to stop being solely terrestrial.
