Synthetic embryos to the Chinese space station

Chinese research with synthetic human embryos is a pioneering experiment and the key is in synthetic or artificial or as the International Society for Stem Cell Research advises to call embryo models based on stem cells. This is the correct scientific definition for these biological structures, although it may sound a little confusing,

Do these embryos carry human DNA? The answer is yes, they are created from human stem cells, indeed, but they are not real embryos, but to begin with because they do not come from fertilization and do not have the full potential to develop into a viable human being, so do not expect to see a baby model coming out of those embryos, at most you will see an amalgamation of layers, cells and incipient prototypes of some tissues, but they are not organized in a coordinated way to create a complete living being because they cannot do so. There is no orchestral direction, they are like biological models, they are not a real embryo that can develop, the question then is what these synthetic embryos are for.

These that have been sent from China to space are not the first, the first synthetic embryo was a mouse, it was created in 2022 and the first synthetic embryo with human DNA was created in 2023, in principle they are used to experiment with various therapies that improve our health and in the case of this Chinese experiment, to verify the effects of weightlessness and cosmic radiation on the development of cells, if you wonder if one day this line of research can give rise to synthetic humans like the movie Blade Runner, well I will tell you that maybe, but not now, not in a year, not in 10, not in 50, surely, if it happens, it will be in the distant future, perhaps beyond this century and, of course, after enormous ethical debates.

The reality is that our knowledge of biology is still very far from that possibility. The list of processes and reactions that are set in motion for us to be born is extremely complex, if we compare the development of an authentic human embryo until it sees the light as a baby in its mother's arms with a perfectly coordinated orchestra playing a symphony by Gustav Maller or Dimitri Ostakovic, which are one of the most complex that exists. If you want to see how a musician sweats, go to one of his concerts.

The real human embryo is one of those complex symphonies, those highly coordinated masterpieces, because these structures, these synthetic embryos, would be like four friends at 5 in the morning after a crazy night playing the Asereje with a garbage can, that is the distance between a real human embryo and a synthetic one and perhaps I am short, but why has China sent these synthetic embryos into space? Well, to try to answer a big question.

Can humans colonize the Moon, Mars or Beyond? Or is our biology tied to Earth's gravity? Colonizing means establishing new homes, creating families, having children, but could we have children in conditions of weightlessness or very limited gravity? To get an answer, Chinese scientists sent the samples with the synthetic embryos to the Chinese space station aboard the Siansu 10 cargo ship, launched in early May 2026.

They only let those embryos develop for 5 days, after those five days, they froze them and then brought them back to Earth and compared their progress with other identical reference samples grown here on Earth during the same period of time, for 5 days. All synthetic embryos sent into space were simultaneously exposed to microgravity and cosmic radiation conditions.

Although I have to specify one thing here, the space stations, both Chinese and international, are technically still within the Earth's magnetic field. Astronauts are not as protected from cosmic radiation as we are here on the surface, but they are a little more protected by the Earth's magnetic field than if they were in deep space, for example, taking a trip to Mars, but although it is not a full dose of cosmic radiation, it is a fairly important reference to what could happen to a real embryo traveling through space, to a colony on Mars or to Jupiter or the Moon.

As of this publication, the embryos are frozen on the Chinese space station, waiting to return to Earth and carry out the corresponding analyses, so the results are expected to be ready in a few months, perhaps at the end of 2026 or beginning of 2027.
