Ecosystem

An ecosystem is a community where the biotic components (plants, animals and microbes) of a habitat and the abiotic components (physical, non-living components) (air, water, soil, and sunlight) live and are interdependent. The activities involved in farming are performed in a system known as the agricultural ecosystem. These systems are vital because they inform us about the fertility and health of agricultural land, the productivity of the farm as well as the sustainability of farming.

If the agricultural ecosystem is healthy the crops will grow, the animals will flourish because nutrients will be provided to support plant growth (healthy soil), living organisms that help with the yield of the crop and animal well-being will be present, such as those which facilitate pollination (bees and butterflies) and beneficial predators (birds) that eliminate pests from crops.

There will also be minimal usage of potentially damaging chemicals that are often used to increase yields.
If the ecosystem of a particular area is damaged it may lead to several negative impacts. Deforestation, grazing, water and air pollution, over-application of fertilizers and pesticides are some ways that a farming ecosystem may be negatively affected. As a result soil will lose fertility, biodiversity will decrease and the farmer may face a low yield of crops.

Further, he may be able to sustain his crops with the pests and he may have additional costs in maintaining crop yield.
By maintaining agricultural ecosystem health using suitable techniques such as crop rotation, organic farming, agroforestry and water conservation methods farmers can enhance agricultural productivity. At the same time these methods also help in conservation of the ecosystem.

Changes in climate also pose a threat to the ecosystems globally and that is likely to affect planting seasons, availability of water and the survival of several species. Farmers, communities and individuals should be made aware of the importance of farming ecosystems and conservation.

Conclusively an ecosystem provides a basis of agriculture and the entire survival on earth. Sustainable ecosystems will lead to more productive and higher farm yield and the conservation of resources and biodiversity, which would benefit every one as well as future generations through suitable farming activities and awareness regarding importance of nature.
