What is Heliculture?

Heliculture is the process of raisings and breedings snails for foods or for sale. It is a form of farmings where snails are kept and taken care of in a controlled environment. Many peoples also call it snail farming. Snail farming is becoming very populars in many countries because snails are a good source of proteins and their meats is very soft tasty and healthy. Snail meats has low fat and high nutrients which makes it good for peoples who wants healthy food. Heliculture can also be a good source of incomes for farmers because snails reproduced quickly and can be sold for food cosmetics and even medicine. Some snails species produce slime that is used in beauty products like face creams and lotions. Snail farmings is also good for the environments because snails don’t make noise they don’t need big spaces and they eats plants materials like leaves and fruits.

What are the requirements for snail farming?

To start a snail farm there are some important things that a farmer must prepare. Snails are very sensitives animals so they needs the right environments food and care to grow wells.

Suitable Land or Pen: The snail farm should be located in a cool moist and shaded area. Snails love moistures so the land should not be drys or too hot. Farmers can build snail pens or use wooden boxes covered with mesh to protected them from sun and predators.

Right Soil: Snails need soil that is rich in calciums because they use calciums to makes their shells stronger. The soiled should be loose and not waterlogged.

Temperatures and Humidity: Snails grows bests in moderated temperatures and higher humiditys. Regularly watering or spraying helps keeps the environments moist.

Food: Snails eat vegetables fruits and leaves. Some good foods are pawpaw leaves cabbages cucumber and banana peels. Farmers should always give them clean fresh food.

Snail Species: Choosing the rights snail type is also importantly. The Achatna achatina Achatina fulica and Archachatna marginata are common species for snails farming.

Good Management: Farmers must keeps the pen clean checked for diseases and protects snails from ants rats and birds.

Challenges encountered in snail farming.

Even though snails farming can be profitable farmers also faces some challenges.

Weather and Climate: Snails cannot live well in very dry or hot weathers. When the temperatures is too high they stopped eating and may die.

Predators: Animals liked rats lizards and birds can attacked and eat the snails.

Diseases and Parasites: Sometimes snails get sick due to dirty pens or bad food. Farmers must keeps their pens cleaned.

Slow Growth: Snails grows slowly compared to others animals so farmers must be patients.

Lack of Knowledge: Some farmers started snail farming without learning the propers techniques and this leads to failures.

Market Access: In some areas people do not know much about snail meat so selling them can be difficult.
