Do you know that toothpaste can actually spoil your teeth? Surprising right? Something you thought is actually a cleansing agent can actually spoil your teeth because of the content in it. Not all though. Also, the way we use our toothpaste can actually cause serious health problems.

How? Health hacks with BossJ can help you prevent certain things. I'm not a medical practitioner, but I do research a lot and research has proven that toothpaste can spoil our teeth. So it's not just about brushing our mouths properly, what toothpaste do you use to brush? Let's discuss how it can actually spoil our teeth.

How toothpaste can spoil our teeth and give bad breath and mouth odour

I was just sitting in the comfort of my home, trying to remember my high school days. Then, it flashed through my mind that my chemistry teacher once told us about the fluoride component in toothpaste and how excessive fluorides can damage our teeth. I then took on a research project on this and discovered that toothpastes have a range of fluoride concentration in it and excess of these things fluoride concentration can be hazardous.

  • Toothpastes contains fluorides that help in preventing tooth decay and also strengthen the teeth by giving it a strong resistance to acid attacks that may appear harmful. While these may be harmless and essential to be contained in toothpaste, excess of it can cause tooth decay and damage.

  • Fluoride levels are measured in ppm which means parts per million and the standard levels for Fluoride in toothpaste by the World Health Organisation is 1000 ppm as minimum to 1500ppm. This is for both adults and children.

When purchasing a toothpaste irrespective of the brand, don't just check the cost. Check the following.

  • Fluoride levels of 1000-1500ppm

  • Expiration date and NAFDAC registration number

  • Check the colour bar and try to choose blue, green, red and black labels except it's in a sachet.

  • Also check for inspection numbers and the likes. This is to prevent purchasing fake Toothpastes.

How to use Toothpaste?

Most people don't know how to use toothpastes. They feel the more toothpaste on their brush, the more effective the cleaning will be. No.

  • When using toothpaste on our toothbrushes, we should use it in bits, half of our toothbrushes in length if you're to measure. Most times the more we use this toothpaste, we increase the chances of getting harder teeth with risks of chemical intake and the likes. So it's essential to use it in bits to avoid discolouration.
