Preparing for the New Year

The Sinhala and Tamil New Year is a very special time for us.This year, we got school vacation on the 10th of April.So we had only a few days to get ready, so everything was a little busy but also exciting.On the 10th of April, we had a family celebration. One of my nephews celebrated her 10th birthday. I made a birthday cake for her with love.

It was a happy moment for all of us. On the 11th, we went to my akka’s house to celebrate the birthday.We spent the whole day there, talking, laughing, and enjoying akka's delicious food.

We also had our dinner there. The next morning, we came back home.When we came home, we had many things to prepare for the New Year.

We had not done much work before, so we had to hurry.On that day, I bought some household items. After that, I cleaned the house and arranged everything neatly with my husband.On Monday, my mother made very tasty oil cakes.The smell filled the whole house and made us feel the New Year spirit. I also helped by making kokis. In the evening, we went to Kalana’s house to help his mother. She had already made some sweetmeats.I joined her and helped to make achcharu and brinjal moju.We were very busy on that day, but it was full of joy . We came back home around 9 p.m., feeling tired but happy with lot of beautiful hopes to spend the next day.
