Tom Holland pencil portrait drawing
Good day, Steemians.
Hope all is well and you're all doing okay. Happy new week, and I wish the best for all of you. Today I present to you one of my lastest pencil drawing - Tom Holland. I chose Tom Holland as my subject, not just because he’s widely recognized but because his face carries a natural, approachable expression that translates beautifully into pencil work. This artwork was both a challenge and a refreshing experience, especially because of his expressive facial features and signature smile. Below are the steps I took in creating this drawing.
Drawing materials
• A4 paper
• mechanical pencil
• graphite pencils
• charcoal pencil
• black pen
• eraser
• sharpener
Step-by-step process
Step 1
I first started drawing the eyes. The eyes were my starting point—they often bring life into the drawing. I carefully shaded around the eyelids and pupils, leaving subtle highlights to create a natural shine. Then I added the glasses as well.
Step 2
Next I worked on the nose and the smile. The smile was approached with restraint. Instead of outlining each tooth, I suggested their form through shading. Then using my 3B and 2B pencils, I slowly shaded across the face, paying attention to how light touches the forehead and fades into the cheeks.
Step 3
Next was the hair. For the hair, I used layered strokes to follow its natural direction. Rather than shading it all at once, I built it gradually, using darker pencils to add depth and contrast.
Step 4
After doing that, I then focused on the neck and shoulder. Using my 5B and 6B pencils, I gradually shaded the neck and the shoulder as well.
Step 5
Then finally, I lifted highlights with an eraser, especially on areas where light naturally hits. The clothing was kept simple and slightly darker, just enough to frame the face without drawing attention away from it. Then below is my final result.
Here's a picture of me and my drawing.
Creating this portrait of Tom Holland wasn’t just about drawing a celebrity; it was about translating emotion, character, and detail onto paper using nothing but graphite. Every face has its own rhythm, and capturing it requires slowing down and truly seeing—not just looking. Thanks for stopping by, fellow artists and art lovers! 🙌 I’d love to hear your thoughts.
