A Lesson Life Taught Me.

🔹 What is the most valuable lesson life has taught you?

The most important thing which I have learned about life is that it is possible for the kind of people whom one associates with to determine either the future ahead of him or drag him away from his future gradually. It is very important to have good friends but not all good friends will accompany an individual all through life. I have also learned that it is not necessarily the length of time people know each other or the fun they share which is important, rather it is their characters and the kind of decisions they make.

There was a time during my secondary school days when I used to hang out with my friends John and Steven all the time; from playing football at the end of each class period to even telling jokes in class. Our teachers kept on advising us to work hard as the examination period was coming but John and I used to listen to what Steven said that we could always study later. Once there was an afternoon when I saw some of my classmates remaining behind in class to do some revision while we were going to the football field. When the results were out It turned out that I had failed which my classmates had passed well. This experience made my know that my future was been affected by the kind of individuals I associated with.

This is the realization that dawned on me during my secondary education. I had a group of mates that were always full of fun and very popular in school. Most of the time was spent by laughing, playing football, and avoiding class because we always felt that there would always be time to go through our books at a later time. I recall one examination period when one of my classmates who always went to class alone invited me to come revise together after school.

I declined because my friends had arranged to play some more football. The grades I got in the exam were way below what I actually could do because that classmate ended up being among the best in the class. This is a realization that came to me when I realized that my poor grade did not stem from a lack of intelligence but the decisions I make and people I choose to move around with. Some of my friends ended up repeating classes while others dropped out of school completely.

🔹 How has this lesson changed your life or the way you make decisions today?

Ever since then, I am more deliberate on the company that I keep and the choices that I make. I don’t make friends anymore just because they are good company; rather, I look for people who can push me to grow, to be disciplined, and to be honest. When I have to make some big choices in my life, I always ask myself if these choices will bring me one step closer to what I aim for in life or farther away from them.

🔹 What advice would you like to give others based on your experience?

1. Find friends that acknowledge your achievements and help you turn into an even better person than you are now.

2. Don’t trade off your future plans for some momentary pleasure. The thrill will pass very fast while the effects of your actions may stay with you for many years.

3. Be able to think on your own. Your friends should respect your decisions, but true success awaits you only if you have enough bravery to take right action even if it’s on your own.
