Hello Teaching Team

Hello My Steemain Friends ,

Today I am writing about an interesting Steemit Engagement Challenge S32- W1: which is all time my favourite topic ""Real Life Problem Solving Challenge: Save Electricity At Home" this amazing challenge organised by @ahsansharif.

What are two electrical appliances in your home that use a lot of electricity? Explain with original pictures

Absolutely! Nowadays, everything runs on electricity, and we have become heavily dependent on various electrical appliances. Consequently, electricity consumption has surged significantly—a fact that becomes painfully apparent at the end of the month when a hefty bill arrives. It is at that moment that one realizes the need to use electricity judiciously, ensuring that our budget remains intact while we continue to enjoy the conveniences it offers.

During the summer season, the air conditioner (AC) consumes the most electricity. For instance, a bill that typically hovers around ₹1,500 in the winter months nearly doubles in the summer—reaching anywhere between ₹3,200 and ₹3,500—solely due to the operation of the AC. This often becomes a cause for concern. Even if we run the AC throughout the day—pausing it intermittently—it still racks up a consumption of 15 to 20 units.

The Second Appliance:

The second major appliance is the refrigerator (fridge). Since a fridge operates continuously—we never switch it off—it runs 24 hours a day; naturally, this contributes to the electricity bill. I used to have a habit of switching off the fridge during the day—for two to three hours at a stretch—in an attempt to save electricity.

However, this practice eventually caused my fridge to malfunction. When the repair technician arrived, he advised me never to switch off the refrigerator. Since then, I have stopped turning it off. Given that the fridge runs around the clock, it is only logical that it will inevitably contribute to the electricity bill.

What two methods do you use to reduce electricity consumption? Show at least one practical method with a selfie.

The methods I employ to minimize electricity consumption are as follows: whenever we switch on the AC, we make it a point to set a timer—usually for two hours or an hour and a half—just long enough for the room to cool down. Once the AC switches off automatically, we simply turn on a ceiling fan in the room. This still allows us to sit comfortably.

A second strategy we adopt is to encourage everyone in the household to gather in a single room. This ensures that the lights and fans in the other rooms remain switched off, thereby preventing any unnecessary or wasteful consumption of electricity.

Have the two methods you use to reduce electricity consumption resulted in a reduction in your electricity bill or not? Explain

Yes, absolutely! Once I began implementing these electricity-saving strategies, I observed a noticeable improvement—our electricity bill is now consistently coming in at a much more reasonable and manageable amount. Previously, things were quite unpredictable because we didn't really keep track of our consumption. However, we now have a rough estimate: by noting when the AC and other household appliances are running, we can calculate how many units of electricity are consumed in a single day. Based on this calculation, we can determine—with a fair degree of accuracy—what our monthly electricity bill is likely to be.

If we notice that the projected bill seems high, we adjust our usage accordingly to ensure that our actual electricity consumption remains within a reasonable limit. By monitoring the electricity meter, you can also modify your habits to identify and eliminate instances of wasteful electricity usage; we have achieved considerable success in controlling our electricity bills by doing just this. This approach ensures that our finances are not burdened by unnecessary extra costs.

What is the easiest habit for you to save electricity?

To save electricity, I have adopted a very simple habit in my home: since the summer heat is often intense—making it difficult for anyone, especially children, to cope without an AC—we ensure that whenever the AC is running, everyone gathers in the same room. Instead of sitting in separate rooms and running individual coolers, we all stay together in one space. If everyone sits in a single room—turning off all the fans and coolers to run only the AC—I believe the resulting electricity bill will be significantly lower.

It is far more efficient and beneficial to run a single AC unit than to have two or three separate coolers running simultaneously; this is a habit we actively practice in our household.

During the summer season—whether it is day or night—we all stay together in the same room. We also remain vigilant to ensure that no electricity, fans, or lights are left running unnecessarily anywhere else in the house, thereby preventing excessive power consumption. Thus we save electricity.

What advice would you give to others to save electricity so that they can reduce their electricity bill and save money?

To help save electricity, my advice to everyone is this: use only as much electricity—and run only those appliances—as are absolutely necessary.

IMG-202605280010.jpg

  • Do not leave lights or fans running unnecessarily in empty rooms.
  • If everyone cultivates the habit of gathering and sitting together in a single room, we can collectively save a significant amount of electricity.
  • Before leaving the house, do not forget to switch off all electrical appliances.
  • Once your mobile phones, computers, or laptops have finished charging, remember to unplug them from the power outlet.
  • Use appliances that consume less electricity; for instance, 5-star rated air conditioners and refrigerators are significantly more energy-efficient.

  • Use LED bulbs, as they consume considerably less electricity.

  • If possible, definitely install solar panels, as they allow us to harness sunlight to generate electricity for our use.

  • Try to avoid switching on the lights during the day. If your room or home is equipped with windows and receives adequate natural light, you can conserve electricity by simply refraining from turning on the lights during the daytime.

It is very true that air conditioners consume the most electricity. The bill for using all the equipment in the house is more than the bill for using the air conditioner. Of course, you have given a great example of how to reduce costs even by using the air conditioner, which is certainly effective. I believe that if you set a timer for one and a half to two hours, it will automatically turn off after the time. The room will also remain cool. Thank you for giving a wonderful article. I wish you success.

You are right on those top two appliances you mentioned. I could remember the last time i used the Air Conditioning, I consumed my weekly energy unit in just less than 12 hrs. I have been careful with this gadget since then. For the second appliance, it is an inevitable item at home that must be used.
While I have thinkered on replacement them with energy-consuming models, we have to keep bearing the discomfort in bills.
Nice write-up and good luck to you.

Hola amiga.

Saludos y bendiciones.
