SLC32-W1 || Real Life Problem Solving Challenge: Save Electricity At Home

Hello friends and welcome to my blog. Let’s talk about saving electricity at home. Electricity is a very Important necessity in our homes because most of the activities in our home are dependent on it. We preserve food, heat water, charge appliances and etc. Electricity makes our life easy and comfortable.
However the increase in electricity tariffs has made it necessary that we learn how to mange and use electricity in the home. We can do this by developing simple habits that saves energy, reduce our electricity consumption and hence lower our bills so we can save money for other important needs.
What are two electrical appliances in your home that use a lot of electricity? Explain with original pictures. |
|---|
Two electrical appliances in my home that use a lot of electricity are the deep freezer and the water heater. The deep freezer is one of the most important appliances in my house because it helps me to preserve food. I also use it to preserve vegetables, fruits, drinks and other perishable items.

The freezer operates almost throughout the day hence it consumes a good amount of electricity. Even when I am not actively using it, it still works because it has to maintain a cool temperature. During hot weather, it works even harder to keep cool temperatures hence even consumes more electricity.
The second appliance is the water heater. Our water heater uses a considerable amount of electricity because it generates heat to warm the water we use for bathing and other domestic activities.

The amount of electricity it consumes increase quickly whenever it’s turned on for a long period. It tends to consume more electricity during cold periods and during the morning hours when several people need hot water.
These two appliances are very important in my house but they also contribute more to the electricity bills.
What two methods do you use to reduce electricity consumption? Show at least one practical method with a selfie. |
|---|
There are several ways that I use to try to reduce the consumption of electricity but the two main methods I use is switching off the appliances when they are not in use and reducing the operating time of the appliances that uses high energy like the water heater.

For the first method of turning off electrical appliances when they are not needed, I make sure to switch off lights, fans, televisions, chargers and other devices in the house when they are not in use.
When we leave appliances running unnecessarily, we waste electricity. So I am able to reduce the amount of electricity daily by switching them off. I switch off the freezer when there’s nothing inside it or when it’s too frozen and already had thick ice formed.
I also avoid opening it all the time to avoid it trying to use more electricity to maintain it’s temperature and when it’s not in use, I switch it off and I unplugged it from the socket to avoid phantom electric wastes. (Small amount of electricity is being used even when the devises are switched off so it best to unplug them entirely)
The second method I use in limiting the usage time is to switch the heater on shortly before using it and switching it off immediately after use. This helps to prevent unnecessary wasting of electricity.

Have the two methods you use to reduce electricity consumption resulted in a reduction in your electricity bill or not? Explain |
|---|
Yes, these methods I use have resulted in a reduction in my electricity bills. Before I became intentional about saving electricity, I didn’t pay much attention to these habits of saving electricity and hence the electricity finished in time and the bills were always higher.
After I started paying attention to switching off the appliances and reducing the water heater operation time, I noticed that the electricity began to last longer hence costing less money.
I noticed this difference over a period of time because the energy wasted was being reduced. For example turning the light offs during the day and using natural light and also turning off all appliances when leaving the house may seem like a small action, but when we practice it over time and consistently, we will see that it helps to reduce electricity wastages drastically.
These habits and methods have not only helped to reduce my electricity bills but have taught me the importance of conserving energy and using electricity responsibly.
What is the easiest habit for you to save electricity? | |

The easiest habit for me to save electricity is to switch off the light and the electric appliances whenever I leave the room and when they are not in use.
This is a simple habit that doesn’t require extra money, special equipment usage or even extra energy. It only requires discipline and conscious effort on my part.
Over time it has become a part of me that I do them automatically without even thinking about it. Whether it’s light bulbs, extensions, fans, television, chargers etc, I always try to switch them off when not needed.
This habit increases the life span of these appliances and also reduces electricity wastage and my electricity bills. I believe that when we practice this types of simple habits consistently, they make a whole lot of difference.
What advice would you give to others to save electricity so that they can reduce their electricity bill and save money? | |

My advice to others is to be conscious of how they use electricity so as not to waste it. A lot of people waste electricity and are not even aware of it.
They should always switch off their electric appliances whenever they are not in use. They should avoid leaving light, chargers, television, fans and etc on when they are not in use.
They should unplug these devices when they are not in use because some devices still continue to use electricity even when they are in standby mode.
They should limit the time usage of their high electric appliances that uses more electricity such as air conditioners, electric cookers, water heaters etc
They can also switch the type of appliances they use to using appliances that are energy saving and sufficient as they consume less energy and are still effective. Example is the use of LED bulbs as against using incandescent bulbs.
The LED bulbs uses less energy and still last more meaning they will spend less money on replacement and bills over time and they are environmentally friendly.
Also families should educate every member of the home on the importance of saving electricity and especially the children. If every member of the family develops electricity saving habits, it would help to make the consumption of electricity more efficient hence less bills.
In conclusion saving electricity does not only help to reduce electricity and save money, it helps to conserve our energy resources and also protect our environment.
Thank you for coming down this lane with me. I invite @josepha @wilmer1988 and @suboohi to join the challenge.

Indeed deep freezer consume enough electricity especially when you're using prepaid meter you will get to know how consumable it is.
Thank you @suboohi for your support
You have a good way of saving electricity despite using high electrical appliances. Wishing you good luck.
Great post for learning everyone.
