SLC-S31W2 -“My taste, My Culture; Across Borders’’.
Hello friends!
Before we begin, I want to sincerely thank the Steemit team once again for this beautiful privilege. Thank you for creating a space where taste and culture are truly celebrated.
Welcome to Week 2 of this exciting cultural journey: “My Taste, My Culture” (Expressing Culture Through Taste).
🌍 What is this week about? — Across Borders
Last week, we explored foods that reflect our identity and heritage. It was a fulfilling experience seeing the diversity in our cultures.
This week, we go a step further…
👉 We step into another culture through food.
Food is a universal language.
It allows us to experience another people’s tradition, lifestyle, and history—without leaving our homes.
Every culture has a meal that tells a story about:
- Its origin
- Its people
- Its environment
- Its identity
This week is about curiosity, respect, and cross-cultural exploration.
🍲 My Cultural Exploration
I am from the eastern part of Nigeria (Igbo precisely), and for this week’s exploration, I prepared Afang Soup, a rich and nutritious dish from the Efik and Ibibio people of Southern Nigeria (Cross River and Akwa Ibom State).
Afang soup is made from afang leaves and waterleaf, cooked with assorted meats, stockfish, dry fish, periwinkles, and palm oil. It is commonly eaten with swallow like fufu, garri, or pounded yam but can also be eaten with any swallow of choice.
Though this meal is not from my tribe, preparing it helped me understand the culture of the Efik and Ibibio people.
In their culture, this dish represents:
- Abundance – it has rich and diverse ingredients.
- Hospitality – often served to guests and on special occasions.
- Tradition – it’s passed down through generations.
👉 This is more than just a meal—it is a cultural experience across borders.
