National Day Celebration in Cameroon.

Hi guys, accept warm Steem greetings from the motherland of Cameroon, and welcome to my blog, where I'm gonna share my thoughts on the National Day celebration in Cameroon today.

Today marks another National Day celebration, with colourful parades, patriotic songs, and symbolic displays of unity across Cameroon 🇨🇲. From the disciplined march-past of the military to the energetic participation of pupils from basic education, students from secondary schools, professional institutions, universities, and even political parties, the streets once again echoed with the spirit of national pride.

Across the ten regions, grandstands were filled with administrators, traditional rulers, diplomats, and ordinary citizens waving flags and celebrating the motto of our nation (Peace, Work, Fatherland).

The military showcased strength and discipline, while educational institutions demonstrated the dynamism and hope of the younger generation.

Political parties marched in their colours, all projecting an image of a nation standing together despite its differences. Indeed, National Day remains one of the rare moments when Cameroon publicly reminds itself of the dream of unity in diversity, that is a country made up of many cultures, languages, and identities striving to coexist under one flag.

But beyond the music, the uniforms, and the beautifully decorated cardboards preaching national unity, one difficult question continues to linger on my mind: Are Cameroonians truly united?

For many citizens, especially those in the English-speaking North West and South West regions, the celebrations may feel disconnected from their daily realities. For more than nine years now, these regions have witnessed an armed conflict that has claimed lives, displaced families, disrupted education, destroyed businesses, and deepened mistrust among citizens. Thousands of children have grown up hearing gunshots instead of classroom bells, and many communities still live under fear and uncertainty.

It becomes difficult to fully celebrate unity when a significant part of the country continues to experience pain, insecurity, and division. The slogans on banners and speeches from official platforms sound powerful, but genuine national unity cannot only be performed during ceremonial marches. It must also be felt in the lived experiences of the people.

True unity is not merely standing together on May 20th, it is ensuring justice, dialogue, equal opportunity, inclusion, respect for diversity, and lasting peace for every Cameroonian regardless of language, region, or political opinion.

Cameroon possesses enormous potential. Our diversity should be our greatest strength, not a source of conflict. The resilience of our people remains admirable, and despite the challenges, many citizens still believe in the possibility of a more peaceful and inclusive nation.

As the drums fade and the parades come to an end, perhaps the real challenge begins now that is moving beyond symbolic celebrations to sincere national healing. The future of Cameroon will depend not only on how beautifully we march together today, but on how honestly we confront our divisions and work collectively toward lasting peace tomorrow.
