Sodium batteries will no longer explode

In the tests the batteries resist.

Researchers from the Chinese Academy of Sciences have just presented a solution that can completely change the so-called thermal runaway, a new sodium battery capable of protecting itself. During tests, this battery withstood temperatures of up to 300 °C, without catching fire, without exploding or collapsing. And this happens thanks to a mechanism that until recently simply did not exist, it is a type of internal firewall.

Unlike traditional batteries that rely on external structures to contain failures, this new technology creates a barrier within the cell itself at the exact moment the risk appears. When the temperature exceeds a certain limit, the liquid electrolyte in the battery undergoes a transformation, solidifies and forms a physical layer that blocks the spread of heat. In practice that interrupts the chain reaction before it becomes uncontrollable, because that is exactly how thermal runaway occurs, heat generates more heat, which generates even more heat and in a cycle that rapidly accelerates until causing fires or explosions.

But here that cycle is simply broken, the battery is protected and that detail changes everything in safety tests, including drilling with nails. One of the most extreme scenarios to simulate internal failures. The cell remained stable, without smoke, without fire, without explosion. And the most interesting thing is that this extra security compromises performance. The battery achieves competitive levels of energy density and operates over a wide temperature range, from extremely cold environments to intensely hot conditions.

This opens space for applications where risk has always been a problem, electric vehicles, heavy trucks, large scale energy storage, but there is an even more strategic reading behind this, because while the world discusses autonomy, range and charging speed, China is attacking a more fundamental point, security and whoever solves this problem first not only gains technological advantage, it gains trust.

And in a market that depends directly on the perception of risk, that can be decisive.
