Security still remains one thing humanity greatly needs. It's never negotiable. People want to enjoy freedom, to living in peace, have a good night rest without fear, move around freely, and confidently plan their future.
A society can be rich in technology, modern day infrastructure, it still remains that if people feel unsafe, it can be said that development is not achieved here.
In the society today, just like in my country, insecurity is now becoming a normal thing where you see different forms of it. One thing we should know is this, security shouldn't be the responsibility of the government alone, it should be a collective effort of everyone in the society because safety begins with you and me.

In Nigeria today, the word insecurity keeps trending by the day. Nigerians no longer feel safe in their homes for the fear of bandits, various kidnapping cases, cybercrime has become a normal thing, domestic violence, even schools , social media spaces, churches and work places are no longer safe. Looking at all these as a threat to man, you will understand why security in a society is very important because it brings peace and stability.

What is the definition of security according to your perspective?

Security simply means the act of protecting the lives and property of the people in a particular society.
It also means that I am confident that my life, rights, future and dignity as a citizen of my country is safe. Security most times shouldn't be relegated to only the military and police in a society rather it should also include emotional, social, economic, digital, and psychological safety.

A society free from insecurity is one where people go about their daily activities without fear. For instance, children should feel safe in schools while learning, a woman in a public space should feel safe, citizens of the society should be able to believe in their security system, prioritizing justice.
Let's just forget about the whole big grammars, in my own personal definition, security means peace of mind and this includes, protecting people irrespective of their status, nationality and religion.

Why is social security as important as technical security?

Today, many nations focus heavily on technical security such as cybersecurity systems, surveillance cameras, military weapons, and advanced technology. While these are important, social security is equally necessary because society is built on human relationships and trust.

We can say that social security has to do with the welfare and well being of the people within a community. These involves rights to employment, education, healthcare, justice and support for the vulnerable ones.
A nation with strong military defense, but yet it citizens suffers from hunger, unemployment, inequality, or discrimination/brutality, still suffers insecurity.

Imagine where there's poverty in a society, you will observe rise in criminal activities because everyone wants to survive.
Same thing goes, if the young ones don't have a job, frustration sets in, you might likely see them indulging in cybercrime or violence. Therefore, improving social conditions helps reduce insecurity naturally.

Social security has a way of strengthening unity because when you accord some values, respect support to people, you see them put in their best thereby bringing positivity, promoting trust, and stronger bonds.

To establish a civilised society, what are the key principles that should be implemented?

To achieve this, several important principles must be practiced consistently:

▪️A society that is civilized and secured is formed on justice, equality, respect, and cooperation within the people, where every citizen demands a fair treatment irrespective of their gender, religion or status. By practicing justice, brutality and discrimination will reduce. Likewise, the human rights of the citizen should be protected.

▪️With good leadership, comes a stable society. Therefore, our leaders must apply transparency, accountability and integrity because corruption is one things that weakens a nation.

▪️Quality education contributes to building a peaceful and progressive society. Education helps in decision making and in shaping responsible people in the society promoting peace and order.

▪️Security shouldn't be responsibility of the government alone, we all have a part to play. The society can also help in reporting suspicious criminal activities and support the law enforcement teams.
People should also learn to protect themselves by doing the right and apply safety in their daily lifestyle.

Finally, security is the foundation of every successful society. Without security, people cannot truly enjoy freedom, happiness, or progress.a
