As time passes, we often have to adhere to various rules or shoulder responsibilities against our own inclinations in order to adapt. Although this can be physically arduous, it offers the opportunity to acquire new knowledge, become more grounded in reality, and encounter fresh experiences—something I have realized firsthand. In any case, these hardships invariably help us learn something new along the way.

Now, let me tell you what responsibility I have been referring to all this while—it was, in fact, the duty of managing the hostel mess. Those who had been staying there for two years were required to undertake this responsibility for a 15-day rotation. Yet, despite staying for only four months myself, I, too, had to fulfill this very same duty. During that specific 15-day period, the responsibility was entrusted to a team of four of us. It fell entirely upon us to handle all the arrangements—from purchasing groceries to cooking—for 137 residents, every single morning and night. Consequently, immediately after waking up and freshening up in the morning, I would have to head straight to the storeroom. There, I was responsible for measuring out and dispensing various spices, rice, lentils, oil, potatoes, and assorted vegetables in precise quantities, strictly in accordance with our meal plan—a task that proved to be quite arduous.

Afterwards, I had breakfast, which that day consisted of rice, lentils, and a curry made of banana blossoms and potatoes. Subsequently, throughout the day, I had to attend to various tasks such as ordering cooking gas, instructing the person responsible for cleaning the dustbins, and ordering rice, fish, potatoes, and eggs.Subsequently, when the rice delivery arrives, we have to unlock the storeroom and make arrangements to stow it away. Furthermore, we must cross-check the mill's ledger, verify the counts, and transcribe the entries into a fresh register. Then, in the afternoon, we are required to attend to the storeroom duties once again. We also have to oversee the operations in the kitchen area.

Once the cooking was finished, the dining room had to be locked up; additionally, at specific times, the rooftop and the main gate required locking. Every task had to be executed with the utmost care. We were responsible for overseeing everything—including ensuring that the kitchen staff properly cleaned the cooking area. Furthermore, our duties included ringing the dinner bell at night and labeling eggs with the corresponding room or boarder numbers. All in all, after dinner, the four of us would gather to coordinate the next day's meals, settle financial accounts, and attend to various other administrative tasks.In short, every single day was a busy and demanding affair.
