Jesus & the spiritual man: I will ask the Father, and he will give you another helper who will be with you forever. John 14:16
The Gospel of John recounts that Jesus, during the Last Supper, spoke to the disciples about the coming of the spirit of wisdom and the spiritual man. This was the great promise of Jesus, which was fulfilled after his ascension to heaven, at Pentecost.
And this spiritual promise has a theological meaning because when Jesus taught about love, he spoke about the spiritual love called in Greek Agape, the love projected onto all of God's work, the progressive, incremental, gradual, and benevolent love. And this form of love is a grace that is attained through a second birth, the birth according to the spirit. The spiritual man united with the spiritual guidance and teaching of the Holy Spirit is the result of this new birth. And this is the great mystery of the Kingdom of God, discovering this hidden treasure, the spiritual love, that emerges in the soul of man as a grace from on high.
But the disciples could not fully understand this spiritual truth because they were immature and incomplete men, that is, they were prudent men. And Jesus knew this fact perfectly well. That is why Jesus had to carefully choose his words when speaking to his disciples at the last supper. The times of the Holy Spirit would begin with his departure, and a new spiritual reality, with the gifts received from above, would begin for his followers and disciples.
The spiritual man is ultimately the realization of the Kingdom of God on earth, the man free from concupiscence and all earthly temptation, because this man is united to the holy spirit through the spiritual gift of eternal life, the life that once obtained cannot be lost. This is why, at the Last Supper, Jesus promised his disciples that they would receive that spiritual helper who comes from the Father and who would join them permanently with the gifts of wisdom, understanding, and spiritual discernment, and he explained this spiritual truth with these wise words: "I will ask the Father, and he will give you another helper who will be with you forever. That helper is the Spirit of Truth" John 14:16-17. This spirit of truth is ultimately the inner spiritual teacher of every Christian who is guided towards eternal life.
