Prophecy of Jesus: If you, even you, had only known on this day what would bring you peace—but now it is hidden from your eyes. Luke 19:42

The Gospel of Luke narrates some special events that happened in the life of Jesus during the time of his triumphal entry into the city of Jerusalem, and among these are the prophecies that Jesus made to his followers and disciples.
Like Isaiah in his Little Apocalypse, Jesus also prophesied about times that have not yet been fulfilled, but that will probably happen in the near future, times of persecution for Christians, rumors of widespread wars, and times when nation will be against nation, the nature of these prophecies is general and difficult to interpret.
But there is one very specific prophecy from Jesus, and that is the prophecy related to the destruction of Jerusalem. This fact occurred during the regency of Emperor Vespasian in Rome, in the year 70 AD, a prophecy that Jesus advanced at least twice while during his physical life on earth.
In Jesus' thinking, the destruction of Jerusalem was a consequence of his death on the cross; with his condemnation, the destruction of the city of Jerusalem was sealed, in other words, his condemnation was also the condemnation of the city. Although the destruction of Jerusalem was due to political and military issues, including the securing of its eastern border by the Roman Empire, this fact has a certain theological meaning because when Jesus encountered a fig tree that did not bear fruit, he condemned it and it withered away, as recounted in the Gospel of Saint Matthew.
The Gospel of Luke then describes how Jesus began his famous prophecy about the holy city: "As he approached Jerusalem and saw the city, he wept over it and said, 'If you, even you, had only known on this day what would bring you peace—but now it is hidden from your eyes. The days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment against you and encircle you and hem you in on every side'" Luke 19:41-43.
All prophecies in the Bible have a purpose, and those of Jesus even more so, because they reveal God's plan for a humanity given over to chaos, injustice, and sin. With this prophecy, Jesus warned his disciples and followers to avoid the city when the time of its siege by the Roman forces came to pass.
