Season 23 Steem Memory Game Contest – Win 40 STEEM! | Theme: Ocean

The first time I got to learn about an ocean was in a book — Curious George. It was illustrated and written by Hans Augusto (H.A.) Rey and Margret Rey, and subsequently published in 1941 by Houghton Mifflin.

In that story, George (a curious monkey) travels with The Man with the Yellow Hat by ship to America. It was during that period that I learned about the Atlantic Ocean. This is the ocean that separates Africa from North and South America. It is also the second largest ocean in the world, taking up about 24% of Earth's water surface area.

As a young child, I was curious. I asked a lot of questions. Through one of those draining moment (yes, draining because my back-to-back questions made my parents and teachers weary most times), I got to discover that the earth has five distinct oceans:

1. The Pacific
2. Atlantic
3. Indian
4. Arctic, and
5. Southern (Antarctic) Oceans.

That book exposed my young mind to what life onboard feels like, including safety tools like the life belt. This is the tool the sailors use to save George when he gets enchanted by the seagulls, attempts to fly but ends up falling off the ship into the ocean. They throw a lifebelt, which George catches and holds onto until he is safely back on board.

There is so much to learn about the ocean. It's a big home for many magical and mysterious creatures. There is so much to learn from it as well. One core lesson is the need to respect the environment.

The ocean has fragile ecosystems and our actions as human can impact sea creatures. I've grown to get attached to watching Nat Geo Wild and Instagram Reels about marine life, particularly moments when sea turtle heavily covered in barnacles are rescued by turtle experts.

Anyways, this has been me all morning.
